Communication has been my passion ever since my father taught me to ‘talk’ with him in Morse Code when I was eight! The fascination of being able to communicate in different ways drove me to take a Modern Languages degree in French and Spanish with Politics, Economics and Linguistics, which then led me into my first career in international marketing.
Exciting as it was to persuade people to buy products and services, I eventually felt there was a more fundamental calling for my communication skills. Out of the blue in 1998, I was offered a temporary contract in Internal Communication where I could help improve communication, and therefore working life, for employees. I started with surveying employees’ needs then building and managing channels and went on to work with board members, creating comms strategies, managing communication through largescale change programmes, training managers and so on.
The fundamentals of Communication
Much personal development, and the start of my training in Nonviolent Communication© in 2006, brought me closer to the type of communication help I knew I really wanted to offer. I realised then that comms strategies and channels, however well-crafted and used, are only meaningful if fundamental personal communication competences are in place across the organisation. Competencies that encompass authenticity, integrity, empathy, right intention and high levels of emotional intelligence. Coupled with skills such as non-judgement, connecting to needs, effective listening and questioning, dealing with arguments, planning comms, and a host of other practices. This is when I started focusing on helping individuals and teams build on and excel in these areas. And I was glad to discover that organisations were starting to realise just how vital these are for performance, and what a difference to performance and productivity it can make when employees receive training and coaching on them.
Other things in life
When I’m not working I spend as much time as possible with my family and two children. I also like to do army-style bootcamp two or three times a week to train the mind as well as the body (!) and as often as I can indulge in my other passion, flying, whether it be taking a short hop with a fellow pilot to a distant airfield for lunch or carrying out aerobatic manoeuvres in the skies above the Cotswolds!
